Economist and Lawyer

Juan is an economist and a lawyer from Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia. He earned a (LL.M) master’s degree in International Economic Law and Policy from the University of Barcelona. He has been admitted to practice law in Colombia since 2017. Juan has advised on trade, investment law, competition law, economic development and intellectual property. He has worked for the Colombian Competition Authority where he advices policy-makers by identifying unnecessary laws and regulations that restrict competition in the marketplace and propose developing alternative less restrictive policies that still achieve government objectives. Also, given his trade law background he advices the Colombian Deputy Superintendent for Competition Protection in the Committee on Customs, Tariffs and Foreign Trade and in the Commercial Practices Committee.

Besides working with Politas, he worked in Sudan’s Accession to World Trade Organization where he advised the Sudan government on how Sudan should amend its laws and administrative decrees that cover intellectual property rights and geographical indications. Also he participated as a research assistant on a paper about the Coffee Value Chain the Intangibles involved in the trade dynamics of the coffee for the WIPO fourth Report in 2017.
